What’s in that diaper?
Many new parents are concerned about what is in that diaper. They want to know that the pee, poop, and gas they find are normal. It is one of the few tangible ways to tell if your baby is healthy and getting enough nourishment. So let’s talk about what is normal in a diaper.
Baby poop; It will vary in color, consistency and frequency. At birth your newborn will excrete a dark and sticky substance that looks weird but is totally normal. Fear not, after the first week it will change in color and consistency. A breast-fed baby will poop yellow, seedy and runny. Formula-fed babies poop tan-colored and soft stools. As your baby starts to eat solids the poop will become browner and smellier in the diaper. If you find mucus in the diaper or poop that is red or black, consult your pediatrician, as it could be an allergy to milk or gastrointestinal bleeding. Don’t be afraid to consult your doctor, as a stool tells a lot about what is going on internally. Your pediatrician will give you information on what to expect as normal in the diaper.
Diapers aren’t fun, but they tell a lot about your baby’s health. Changing times are also a time to play and talk to your baby. The more interaction, love and cuddling you give this precious little one the better. So rather than dreading diaper changing, use it as a time for special bonding.
